The Fraction Strips Game
Grade 7 math
Objective: to learn adding fractions
This game is to be played in groups of 2
Materials: fraction strips, dice
Divide students into groups, each group should have 1 dice and 6 fraction strips (fractions 1 through 1/6)
The players will take turn:
First player roll the dice: the number that appears should be used to make a fraction by having that number as the denominator
The players will take turn and have several fraction, the first player to add the fraction to make the number one is the winner
Example:
player 1 rolls 3, he has 1/3
player 2 rolls 4, he has 1/4
player 1 rolls 1/2, now he has 1/3 and 1/3
player 2 rolls 5 now he has 1/2 and 1/5
player 1 rolls 6, now he has 1/2 1/3 and 1/6 which add up to 1 thus he gets a point
The two players will keep playing for 30 minutes and who ever has the most points is the winner
If a player gets a fraction that is more than one, then he has to start over
This game teaches adding fractions and it also teaches strategies because of the following rules

This game teaches adding fractions and it also teaches strategies because of the following rules
- The player can choose to skip a roll, for example, if 5 is rolled, the player doesn't have to use it and can choose to pass, but he can only pass onces per game
- If 1 is rolled then the player can choose whatever number he wants to use for the fraction (from 2 to 6)
