The Island Game
This game is a review activity for grade 7 math
Before the Lesson (5 minutes)
Topic: reviewing multiplying and dividing decimals using a game
Purpose: have the students solve as much problems as they can with a sense of enthusiasm.
Start with a quick review on how to multiply and divide decimals. Ask students to solve problems with the teacher.
Beginning of the Lesson (15 minutes)
Divide students to groups of 4 or 5 or even 3 depending on their level in class. That is group the smart students together and the weaker students together.
Hand out red markers, and a big poster to each student
Introduce the game:
The game is called Island Game. Each student in the group will be playing against his/her fellow group members.
The rules as follows: each student will draw an island the big poster at their table, they can color their island and give it a name. Then each group will be presented with a question. Their task is to solve that question. Whoever solves it right can bomb someone else's island from their group. Or they can save themselves with a heart.
They will keep playing until the end of the period. The person with the least amount of bombs is the winner.
When everyone in class understands these rules. Present the questions to each group.
Tell them to appoint a group leader, who will be in charge of presenting the question and presenting the answer when everyone is done.
The reason why the groups are divided based on their intelligence level is that the questions that each group will receive differ in terms of difficultly. That is the weaker students will have easier questions while the smart students while have a few challenging ones.
Middle of the Lesson (Part A) (20 minutes)
Have the students play the game and solve as much questions as they can. Walk around to help anyone who is struggling.
Middle of the Lesson (Part B) (10 minutes)
Continue to play the game, take notice of which problems did most student struggle on.
End of the Lesson :
Pick a few of the problems that the students struggled with and solve them on the board
